In literary works, women are often seen as the subordinate characters to the male protagonist. For the women in the three short stories; Barn Burning, Where Are You Going Where Have You Been, and A Good Man Is Hard To Find this ideology holds true. All three stories have male dominance where the male protagonist spiritually breaks the female lead. Barn Burning, which is set during the post-bellum time period, address the sexism that was found in that society. After the culture of the South was destroyed during the civil war and society was attempting to piece itself back together, Abner Snopes a war veteran but viewed more commonly as white trash. Abner controls his whole family but specifically his wife Lennie Snopes with fear. He believes that a family should be loyal to one another despite what they do. Knowing that he is the provider for the family, Abner doesn’t hold back as he lashes out at his family. Lennie, from years of degrading speech, has become almost completely subordinate to him knowing that she has nowhere and nobody else to turn to. Having to watch Abner mistreat her children and bring more suffering on her family kills Lennie’s spirits even more. The few times Faulkner mentions the mother she is portrayed as a cowardly, weak, and powerless person unable to protect the things or people she loves from her husband. Does diabetes, cancer, stomach problems, depression, or suicide sound fun to you? Life is difficult without having an eating disorder. Growing up eating everything I could get my hands on caused health problems for me now that I am older. Binge eating and anorexia are serious eating disorders that cause physical, behavioral, and psychological problems. The most common disorder is binge eating. Binge eating disorder (BED) is consuming large quantities of food in a short period of time. People find that over eating is a comfort zone for them. The problems Americans have with this is being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, joint and muscle pain, sleep apnea, uncontrollable weight gain, gallbladder disease, and certain types of cancer. When I was younger I enjoyed eating, it was a comfort zone for me. I would always challenge myself to eat one more plate than what I had the night before. Whether I was able to or not depended on how much I eat during the day. The older I get the more I understand that how bad it was for me at such a young age. I find it harder to lose unwanted weight now. I have notice that I don’t sleep well and that my body aches all the time. The psychological part of BED is fear of not being excepted if someone finds out, self-harm, feeling extremely depressed, overly sensitive to references about weight, guilt, self-disgust, and self-loathing. Civil rights essay During the late 1800’s America was filled with racism in every state. the African American population tried to get their justice but things never worked out on their side. The court case brown vs. board of education wasn’t actually against one person it was many states coming together and speaking up against segregation. Their freedom was to come but after their sacrifices and their voice was heard all over United States. Many of the young college students gathered and started the student non-violent coordinating committee. These kids used to protest by having sit-ins when they would go sit in white restaurants and have food and hot liquids thrown on them. Their goal was to be non-violent and gain sympathy from people. People started boycotting and having marches to show their discontent with the government and people. They tried many times to get in the high schools peacefully. One of the most famous marches was the bloody Sunday when many African Americans’ marched over the Edmond Pettes Bridge and they got killed, gassed, and shot at by the police. After the Edmond pettes bridge March people from all over the country black and white came and supported the families that had lost family members in this fight. They gave them hope that freedom will come and that they’re on their side. After a couple weeks after president Johnson had given them permission to march they had a peaceful march and protest. This was only the beginning of an end to black segregation in United States. After that the blacks gained the 24th amendment as the end of roll taxes. The voting rights act gave them the right to vote and have their say in the government. Also the brown vs. board of education gave black students to be in the same school as white kids. Many segregated schools were overcrowded, and in order to ease overcrowding, the e Board instituted doublethink’s at some of the schools. Doublethink’s meant that students in fee acted schools attended less than a full day of class. Less school meant that Africanizing children would be receiving less education. CORE was not pleased with the results so they pr tested, along with the Chicago community. The following 4 years, CORE along with the SYNC and the NAACP helped organ nice the â€Å"Freedom Summer† campaign aimed principally at ending the political super session of African Americans in the Deep South. CORE, SYNC and COIF also built 30 Freedom S schools in towns throughout Mississippi. Volunteers taught in the schools and the curriculum n owe included black history. These Freedom Schools were often targets of white mobs. So were the e homes of African Americans involved in the campaign. That summer 30 black homes and 37 blab KC churches were firebombed. Over 80 volunteers were beaten by white mobs and three CORE activists were murdered by the K on June 21 SST, 1964. These deaths created nationwide PU ability for the campaign. Poetic Inspiration Essay In Keats Ode to a Nightingale and Shelleys Ode to the West Wind both poets show much inspiration within their poetry. The bird in Ode to a Nightingale represents a supernatural being conjured up by the speaker. The wind in Ode to the West Wind inspires the speaker while serving as a destroyer and preserver. In the poem, Ode to a Nightingale the reader sees that the poet draws his inspiration through hemlock which the poet had drunk and some kind of opiate. The poet speaks about dying from the consumption of some type of poisonous drink in stanza two. The speaker wants to, Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget / What thou among the leaves has never known (21-22). He doesnt seem to have much respect for or admiration of the world. The speaker cites all of the bad aspects of life and the world which inspire him to contemplate suicide. This idea of death and suicide is further displayed through the quote in stanza six : I have been half in love with easeful Death,Now more than ever seems it rich to die, To cease upon the midnight with no pain, While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroadIn such an ecstasy (52-58).The readers contemplation of suicide is thoroughly depicted through this quote. The reader is actually thinking these thoughts because he realizes that the beautiful birds songs only occur through death because the bird is immortal and with the immortal bird comes the immortal song. He shows his admiration for the bird when he speaks of the birds past experiences. He is greatly inspired by the bird and this is the reason for this poem, but in the last stanza he returns to reality and back to his sole self. He no longer wants to die and hear this immortal song sung by the bird which he once longed to experience. In Ode to the West Wind, the reader sees yet another poet inspired by something that has caught the speakers attention. Bibliography:
